While protecting your oral health might seem like a no-brainer, the fact of the matter is that most people commit some of the biggest crimes against their teeth on a daily basis without even knowing it. Some of the worst culprits are undoubtedly found in your cupboards and refrigerator right now. Here is a look at a few of those insidious products.
Soda and Sports Drinks
This one is obvious, but few people know why. The biggest culprit is, of course, sugar, which is found in great abundance in both. But diet drinks are used as an alternative to those with real sugar, but that is where the second problem presents itself. The reason sugar is bad for the teeth is because bacteria eat it and expel a decaying acid in the process. But even more powerful acids than those exist in all kinds of soda, destroying your teeth.
Juice and Milk
Everyone knows that sugar is bad for your teeth, but few people connect the fact that sugar is not only present in candy and soda. Juice and milk contain sugars, called fructose and lactose respectively, and these substances are just as erosive as soda.
Lemons and Lemon Juice
The citric acid in lemons is exceptionally corrosive to the teeth, whether it is eaten straight or as a juice.
In all of these cases, take steps to avoid tooth decay by rinsing your mouth immediately after consuming sugary or acidic foods or drinks. An alternative would be to chew sugar free gum for ten minutes and then discard it. This promotes saliva production, which protects the teeth, while also removing some bacteria.
