What to Expect from Root Canal

What to Expect from Root Canal 2

A tooth that has been severely damaged by tooth decay or injury most likely needs a root canal procedure. A root canal treatment is the most effective way to save a tooth that would otherwise need to be extracted. Overall, what exactly does the root canal procedure involve?

The first step in a root canal treatment is having an X-ray taken in order to reveal the extent of the complication. Once the dentist has done this, you will be given a local anesthetic. A dental dam is then used to make sure that the tooth that is being treated is isolated from any contaminants in your saliva. The dentist or endodontist will remove the decay from your tooth and drill an access point through which they can get to the pulp. The pulp is then removed, and the canal is flushed and cleaned. An antibiotic may be inserted at this point if you are dealing with an infection.

Your root canal will end up being filled with a rubber-like substance called gutta percha. A filling material of your choice will be used for the rest of the tooth. A crown is then placed on top of this so that your tooth has enough support and protection to withstand everyday forces.
