Tips for Preventing Oral Health Problems
In order to maintain good oral health, it is important to practice preventive dentistry. Brushing and flossing twice a day, along with biannual visits to your dentist for an exam and cleaning are good examples of preventive dentistry.
The bacteria in plaque feed off the sugar in the foods that we eat, and the byproduct is a harmful acid that contributes to tooth decay. That is why it is good to not let plaque accumulate. While brushing and flossing are important for plaque removal, they are most effective when done correctly. Make sure to use fluoride toothpaste when you brush your teeth. Brush with a soft bristle brush and use gentle circular motions to clean the inner surface, the chewing surface, and the outer surface of your teeth. It should take around two minutes to properly brush your teeth. When flossing, be sure to only use up-and-down motions as you clean in between your teeth. In order to further enforce the effectiveness of your brushing and flossing, try avoiding unhealthy foods that are high in sugar.
If you notice a lump in your cheek or a lesion in your mouth that will not heal, contact the dentist. These may be early signs of oral cancer. Sometimes bad breath is simply nothing more than bad breath, but in some cases it can be a symptom of a more serious disease. If mouthwash only temporarily cures your bad breath, it is a good idea to let your dentist look into it. When diseases of the mouth are caught early, the treatment outlook is always much better. That is why it is important to always let the dentist know about any changes you have noticed in your own oral health.
