Another equally important factor is sticking to a proper diet. Avoiding foods that have a high sugar content is a good idea for your health in general, but it is especially important for your teeth. While sugar is a big culprit when it comes to creating tooth decay, there are other items that you may not know can actually promote tooth decay.
Saliva is important for your mouth, because it is a natural way for our mouths to cleanse themselves. While saliva alone will not prevent tooth decay, a lack of saliva can increase your chances of tooth decay. There are certain medications out there that have the unfortunate side effect of causing a dry mouth. For example, antihistamines are a common treatment for people who are suffering from allergies. While they provide relief from an itchy nose and watery eyes, antihistamines tend to dry out your mouth. The same holds true for decongestants. Many people do not realize that anti-anxiety medication can also have this affect. In fact, there is some evidence that anxiety itself can lead to a dry mouth.
A lot of people do not always realize that certain foods and drinks that are labeled as healthy are actually high in sugar content. Sports drinks and fruit juices are definitely guilty of fitting into this category. Also, foods that contain high levels of starch are also not very good choices for your teeth. When starch is broken down, it turns into sugar and we already know what sugar does to our mouths.
