Licorice Root and Tooth Decays
When you think of licorice, you are probably not thinking of any health benefits that are associated with it. A recent study turns that notion on its head. In fact, it has been found that licorice root may actually promote good oral health.
First of all, it is important to mention that the licorice sold in our supermarkets usually does not contain any actual licorice root. Anise oil is the ingredient that is used in our candy licorice to give it a licorice flavor. The licorice root that may have health benefits associated with it comes from China. China actually already uses licorice root in some of its herbal medications.
Licoricidin and Licorisoflavan A are the two compounds that have been identified as being responsible for the health benefits of licorice root. They are thought to promote good oral health because they actually prevent the proliferation of bacteria in our mouths. This anti-bacterial property means that they may actually help ward off the bacteria that cause cavities and gum disease.
While the research has been promising, there are possible adverse effects of consuming too much licorice. It has been found to increase blood pressure and encourage salt and water retention in some cases. Regardless of the possible benefits licorice may possess to our oral health, it should not be replaced with the tried and true method of regular brushing and flossing, along with biannual visits to the dentist for an exam and cleaning.
