Keeping Your Teeth as You Age

Keeping Your Teeth as You AgeA common myth that many people take as an inevitability is that you will lose all of your teeth by the time you get old. The truth of the matter is that poor oral hygiene and injury are the main reasons why people end up losing their teeth. By practicing preventive dentistry, you may be able to keep your teeth for your entire lifespan.

The first thing that you will need to do is to be sure that you brush and floss two times a day. When you brush, it is best to use a soft bristle toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. You should spend at least two minutes to brush your teeth properly. Hold your brush at a forty-five degree angle and use gentle circular motions to clean each surface of your teeth. When flossing, avoid using sawing motions with floss. It is much better to use up-and-down motions. For some people, an electric toothbrush may be easier to use instead.

It is important that you go to the dentist two times a year for a professional exam and cleaning. Be sure you find a dentist that utilizes all the current research and latest technologies. Most importantly, make sure the dentist seems to be looking out for your best interests. During the exam portion of your visits, a good dentist will evaluate your teeth, gums, and screen for other conditions such as oral cancer. The earlier an issue with your oral health is caught, the better the prognosis for treatment will be.

If you grind or clench your teeth, be sure to wear a mouth guard. Bruxism can cause serious damage to your teeth, otherwise.

If it has been a while since your last appointment, contact our endodontist in Los Angeles to schedule a consultation. Staying ahead of your oral health is the best way to ensure the longevity of your teeth as you age.
