How Smoking Affects Root Canal Treatments

How Smoking Affects Root Canal Treatments

Root canal treatments become necessary when the pulp of your tooth has been severely affected by decay or trauma. Preventive dentistry, meaning regular brushing and biannual visits to your dentist, is a very effective way at preventing the accumulation of tooth decay that would require a root canal treatment. In a recent study, though, it has been found that smoking actually increases the risk of needing a root canal in men. While the study was only done on men, it can be deduced that smoking has similar implications for women.

It has long been understood that smoking can contribute to poor oral health. Smoking has been known to increase inflammation and to make it more difficult for the body to fight off infections. Part of this may have to do with the fact that smoking actually lowers the oxygen levels of a smoker. In the study mentioned above, it was found that the length of time that the men had smoked was directly correlated to their likelihood of needing root canal treatments. The longer they had smoked, the more likely the need for a root canal. There was also evidence that quitting smoking will significantly lower the risk of needing root canal treatments.

Oral health is strongly linked to overall health. Smoking has been linked to heart disease, cancer, stroke, and many more disorders. Systemic illnesses make proper oral hygiene harder to manage. This is why it is so important to quit smoking. If you are a smoker who is worried about the health of their teeth, contact our root canal dentist in Los Angeles to set up a consultation.
