Cheese and Dairy for Avoiding Cavities

Cheese and Dairy for Avoiding Cavities

Along with regular brushing and flossing, eating a proper diet is a good way to promote proper oral health. It has long been known that we should avoid sugars and starches, as bacteria create a harmful acid byproduct when they turn these items into energy. This acid byproduct is responsible for tooth decay, which causes cavities. A recent study indicates that cheese may actually be a good food for avoiding cavities caused by tooth decay.

Cheese has many perks to our oral health. One of these perks is the fact that cheese is high in calcium. Our teeth and bones get their strength from calcium, and it is important to provide them with a steady supply of it. Additionally, cheese has been found to positively impact the pH levels of our mouths.

It turns out that a pH level of 5.5 is the cutoff point for when our chances to develop cavities becomes greater. When our pH level is below 5.5, our chances of decay significantly increase. The study found that cheese actually increases our pH level, which decreases our chances of decay. Interestingly enough, milk and yogurt did not have the same effect. It is thought that the chewing that takes place in order to eat cheese encourages saliva production. Saliva also plays an important role in a healthy mouth, so this is seen as another positive aspect that cheese has to offer.
